Writing and Spoken Word

Writing on the Wall’s projects hold our communities at their heart, transforming personal lives and the culture of the city through creative writing. Liverpool has always been known as a loud and proud city and WoW’s community is no different. Through our performance projects WoW are empowering children, young people and adults to tell their stories in their own voices, adding vital new talent to the city’s exciting performance scene.

The Last Word was a 12-week spoken word programme with Merseyside Youth Association's Talent Match scheme. A primer of a project, engaging in the tools of writing and the context of spoken word and performance poetry politically and historically, it was delivered to a group of eager young people with fire in their bellies and ink ready to spill across the page. The participants made their debut performance at Liverpool’s Rhyme & Record, a regular open-mic with nationally significant poets and at the climax of the project they performed in WoWFest18 alongside internationally toured Debris Stevenson and local icon Lyndsay Price. The publication, is an exciting and loud collection of their writing.

Then we stepped into the world of rap, with 12 sessions led by international recording artist TL. A group of children and young people from Toxteth developed quick-witted, confidence-busting skills in writing and performance. A project with swagger, we challenged participants with the slick mechanics of rapping with the emotional intensity of spoken word and performance poetry. We kicked off 2018 in style, with a rip-roaring performance in Studio 2. Their recordings are a testament to the hard work and commitment of such exciting young artists. Participants have since performed at our Building Blocks to Freedom outdoor structure, proving how their confidence and ability has risen formidably.
