Peter Tatchell – Not Queer Enough?

For over 40 years, beginning in 1967 with campaigners for Aboriginal rights and against the death penalty, the Australian-born British activist Peter Tatchell has campaigned on issues of democracy, civil liberties, social equality, environmental protection, peace and global justice. He is a co-founder and legal activist in the queer rights direct action group OutRage!, which in 1994 outed ten Anglican Bishops, accusing them of hypocrisy for publically endorsing the church’s homophobic stance. His attempted citizen’s arrest of Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, made him one of the world’s most recognisable campaigners for human rights. A candidate for the Labour party in 1983 and more recently the Green Party, he is, in print and through broadcast media, a frequent contributor on LGBT rights and other issues of social justice, authoring over 3,000 articles and six books.
