What's Your Story? Toxteth & Croxteth

In the summer of 2013 we held our first What’s Your Story? writing course. A diverse group of members from the local communities of Toxteth and Croxteth - areas with high levels of exclusion and social deprivation - worked with tutors, gaining experience of many forms and genres of writing, including short stories, flash fiction and poetry. The group worked over 24 weeks with Paula Currie and Colin Watts who helped shape their writing through creative writing and storytelling. The work in this book covers a whole range of writing, a testament to the imagination of the writers and the new skills they learnt during the course.
The book launch was held in the Town Hall and presented by poet, Levi Tafari and Lord Mayor, Gary Miller. This was the first book outside of our Pulp Idol series to be published, and it was a huge success.

Rose Thomas took part in the What’s Your Story? course and was assisted in writing her developing novel, ‘Now that I Have Found the Words’ based on a young woman struggling to overcome racism and betrayal of friendship in 40’s Liverpool. Rose has since completed her novel and is currently working on the editing process. As part of Black History Month, Rose read extracts of her novel at the Siren Café. The room was heaving with people beaming with pride to hear Rose reading her work. We’ll keep you updated on her progress. For now, why don’t you read Rose’s opening chapter and all our fantastic writers at our discounted price now!
We are currently running a similar 24 week What’s Your Story? course focused on working with unemployed adults. The group have had a consistently high turn out every week and have enjoyed the variety in tutors and styles including poetry, short story writing, spoken word and currently, script writing.
