Bedroom taxes, boardroom bonuses, foodbanks growing bigger than a banker’s wallet: The pressure is on in Aspiration Nation, but we’re all in it together, aren’t we? Writing on the Wall presents a radical programme featuring today’s best writers, ranters, artists, thinkers, commentators and activists, designed to challenge, provoke and inspire you to pick up your pen, change the world and…bake bread. We’ve got Rebels and Radicals, Port City Writers and Old-Fashioned Football Fans, Lockouts and Launches, some Nice Men and Billions of Women, Flashes of Horror, Circus Performers and Curious Stories, and word upon word upon word...all designed to help the pressure drop.

For May 2013 WoW tackles Class – Janet Street Porter; Crime – Kevin Sampson; One Billion Women Rising – Bidisha; Modern Football – Brian Reade; Refugees – Helen Walsh; Hate Crime – Dominique Walker; Drugs – Howard Marks.
WoW’s acclaimed writing competitions, Pulp Idol (for novelists) continues to grow by the year. This year’s Flash Fiction competition has a horror theme – Flash: In the Dark – and will be judged by Merseyside’s own award-winning horror writer, Ramsey Campbell.
WoW launches a new, quirky take on a TV favourite: Dragon’s Pen – an event featuring big name and agents, including: AL Kennedy, Esther Wilson, Kate Haldane, Gordon Wise. Writers will be pitching their work to win the ‘Dragon’s’ Approval.

‘Writing on the Wall always tries to reflect the concerns of the times we live in, and people everywhere are feeling Under Pressure’
Madeline Heneghan, Writing on the Wall Festival Director.
Speaking today, Festival Director Madeline Heneghan, explained that the Writing on the Wall festival is taking place in it’s usual annual slot throughout the month of May, and that the WoW team were commissioned to support the new ‘In Other Words’ festival celebrating the opening of the newly refurbished Central Library, that overlaps the WoW Festival. However, the WoW festival has an identity of its own, supported and appreciated by many people across Merseyside, for whom the WoW Festival has become an annual, landmark event. Ground breaking and truly innovative, WoW continues to promote and support new writers.
