A Rebel Rant with Joan Bakewell

The Silver Revolution - Old age....the age of opportunity?

Joan

Thanks to Joan Bakewell for her fantastic sell-out rant 'The Silver Revolution - Old age... the age of opportunity' at The Bluecoat. Joan spoke rousingly on various issues affecting the elderly today and on issues they will encounter in the future. Through this and a lively Q&A, Joan put forward a thoroughly convincing argument that old age really is the age of opportunity!

Joan Bakewell became a household name when she presented the pioneering 1960's BBC2 programme Late Night Line-Up. She went on to present Reports Action, was the BBC’s Arts correspondent and throughout the 90’s presented the hugely popular Heart of the Matter. Her BBC 2 series, Taboo, pushed the boundaries of what had previously been acceptable on mainstream television. A columnist for The Times, The Guardian and The Independent, she has written four radio plays, six books and had her first novel, All The Nice Girls, published in 2009 at the age of 76. Joan experienced ageism first-hand when she was dropped as the BBC's arts correspondent in 1987. In 2008 Joan was appointed as a 'Voice for Older People' by the Government.

Not Queer Enough

Thanks to Peter Tatchell for an inspiring rant at our Rebel Rant event 'Not Queer Enough' in the Rodewald Suite of Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall. An audience of 120 people heard Peter speak on issues ranging from international human rights legislation, civil partnerships and civil marriage, to the Vatican's change of policy regarding the use of condoms. It was an excellent reminder of the ongoing campaign for both LGBT and human rights.

For over 40 years, beginning in 1967 with campaigns for Aboriginal rights and against the death penalty in Australia, the Australian-born British activist Peter Tatchell has campaigned on issues of democracy, civil liberties, social equality, environmental protection, peace and global justice. Peter Tatchell is a co-founder and leading activist in the queer rights direct action group OutRage!, which in 1994 outed ten Anglican Bishops, accusing them of hypocrisy for publicly endorsing the church’s homophobic stance. His attempted citizen's arrest of Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, made him one of the world’s most recognisable campaigners for human rights. A candidate for Labour in 1983 and the Green Party more recently, Peter is a frequent contributor on LGBT and other issues of social justice in print and through broadcast media, authoring over 3,000 articles and six books.
