Liverpool Young Writers was launched by Writing on the wall in 2007. Since then the members of the group, performing as ‘THE CIPHER’ have lyrically taken their performance to the next level. The group performed with UK number one artists including Sway, Skinnyman, Bashy, Ed Sheeran, LowKey, Miss Bratz and Akala. One member of the group won Slambassadors UK 2009 and a national Poetry Society competition and the group as a whole were nominated for a BeMOBO award at the MOBO ceremonies held in Liverpool in October 2010.  The members of the group performed at the WoW Festival, Liverpool Sound City, The Heritage Lottery Celebration, Brouhaha Festival and most recently at Liverpool’s Slavery Remembrance Day.

They have achieved a lot in a few short years. Members of the group are building upon their time with us by performing in venues across the city.

Liverpool Young Writers Group (LYW) was a beacon of WoW’s support for the latest forms of contemporary literary expression.  LYW used poetry, lyrics, rap and spoken word artistry and prose, to enable young people aged 11 - 19 to develop a voice and an outlet for their latent creativity.

Young WritersThe group took part in a series of activities, workshops and events with Liverpool Museums, the International Slavery Museum and the Institute of Popular Music with a particular emphasis on music of black origin, and its influence upon modern musical and cultural forms, both within Liverpool, and also its impact upon a wider, national audience. There were also workshops on short story writing, with award winning author, Penny Feeny, storyboarding for a TV soap, with a script editor from Coronation Street, and writing for theatre with Royal Court Director Bob Eaton, as well as taking part in a series of field trips to Contact Theatre in Manchester and a writing residential in Ty Newydd, the National Centre for Writing in Wales.

Their weekly sessions gave them the focus and foresight they needed to become great performers. Wow gives our young writers more than just live performance; together we explore the knowledge of our history in literature, music and spoken word, and give people the chance to develop their skills for publication and performance.

Our latest Young Writers group, Word Up ran for 12 weeks, tutored by Nikki Hayden and Jack Finch. The course ended in a fantastic showcasing performance on the roof of the Central Library as part of Light Night and as part of the Writing on the Wall Festival. The young writers work varied from classic poetry to spoken word performances. There will be more performances from our latest Liverpool Young Writer’s group throughout the Summer.

The writers have also been published in WoW’s latest publication.
