Labelled

New Project 'Labelled' kicks off in style!

WoW and Liverpool Young Writers Project 'Labelled' got off to a lyrical, energetic start last night at The Black-E, with a sharp mix of music, spoken word, mellow soul and rap. Our hosts for the night Yasmine and Demi warmed up the fifty strong crowd and introduced Daniel and Dorcas aka Chatterbox and Blue Saint who introduced people to the concept of the project -  to explore the musical and spoken word heritage of Liverpool. People taking part will learn a range of skills and achieve a Silver Arts Award.

Next up was Claire Benjamin, Head of Communities at Liverpool Museums, who explained why they are supporting the project and organising a music-themed tour of the Liverpool Slavery Museum for the young people on the project. Dr Marion Leonard, Director of Collections from Liverpool University's Institute of Popular Music, gave us a flavour of the music we'll be looking at, playing a quick excerpt from three key Liverpool bands and artists - Steve Aldo - Can I get a Witness, The Real Thing - Stanhope Street, and The Christians - Forgotten Town.

We then had a real 'gem' as we were treated to 'The Ghetto', a song written and performed by guitarist and front man of 1970's Liverpool group, The Gems.

Nikki Blaze, Z3R0, Chalkiee, Yasmine & Demi, then led everyone in a huge Cipher, showing them some of the exercises we do in our weekly workshops to help develop our lyrical and performance skills.

The second part of the night featured performances from local rapper and wordsmith, LOKI, Lyrical Productions - three young rappers from L8 who turned up and stormed the open mic after only being together for three weeks (watch this space), and then Blue Saint, Chatterbox and Z3R0 took to the floor to show how they do it with their spoken words, raps and beats, and what others coming onto the project can expect to achieve.

The project meets every Monday at The Black-E from 6.30pm, next to the Chinese Arch in the City Centre. If you can make it, email info@writingonthewall.org.uk or ring 0151 703 0020 and we will send you more information.
