Board of Trustees

Writing on the Wall Board of Trustees is a multi-disciplinary team of highly motivated people from the social economy, secondary education, higher education, private and community sectors. The range of skills provides a mix of management and creative insight that has allowed the festival to develop to its current position. The Board has been established since 2002, but has been working together as a team since 2000, and currently comprises:

Stuart Borthwick is a higher education professional working at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). His current roles include oversight of quality assurance and enhancement at the Liverpool School of Art and Design, and leadership of LJMU’s BA Popular Music Studies course. Stuart also acts as external examiner at the University of Huddersfield. Stuart’s fondest memories of Writing on the Wall events include Irvine Welsh appearing at the festival wearing little other than a giant Brazil flag on the day that Brazil beat England in the 2002 World Cup, the poet John Cooper Clarke telling utterly unrepeatable jokes at the festival in 2008, and the Liverpool Young Writers silencing unruly crowds with performances that led to their shortlisting for a MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Community Award in 2010.

Penny Feeny is a best-selling writer who has long been involved in the arts in Liverpool, serving on the boards of the Everyman and Brouhaha International before becoming a trustee of WOW in 2009. She has been an arts administrator, editor, radio presenter and advice worker but far prefers writing fiction. Her short stories have won many awards and her first novel, That Summer in Ischia, (Tindal Street Press, 2011) topped Amazon’s bestseller list in summer 2011.

Helen Millne is the Chief of Operations and Finance at The Women’s Organisation where she provides leadership in financial management, organisational development and quality and social impact measurement. She has over twenty years’ experience working in the third sector on Merseyside, is a registered Social Accountant and has a Masters in Business Administration (awarded with distinction). Committed to issues of equality and inclusion Helen was a founder member of Writing on the Wall’s legal body and she acts as Treasurer to the Board.

Robyn Donaldson is the Marketing Coordinator at The Poetry Society where she delivers global competitions such as the National Poetry Competition and high profile events with partners such as Southbank Centre, the British Museum and Secret Cinema. Her arts career began when she volunteered for Writing on the Wall alongside studying for an MA in Creative Writing at Liverpool John Moores University, and was soon taken on as Assistant Festival Coordinator. After two happy years at WOW, she moved to London where she also freelances as a copywriter. In a freelance capacity, Robyn has worked for clients such as Twentieth Century Fox, Thomas Cook and the Body Shop, and is also currently working on her first novel.

Maura Kennedy has worked extensively as a programmer of literature events in the UK and Ireland. Her previous positions include Literature Programmer in the Bluecoat and Events Manager with The Reader Organisation in Liverpool and Programme Director of the Cúirt International Festival of Literature in Galway, Ireland. She has also worked with adults and young people returning to education.
